Each week during the season, the USA TODAY Sports college staff (Paul Myerberg, Lindsay Schnell, George Schroeder, Erick Smith, Eddie Timanus and Dan Wolken) will provide their answers to an intriguing question from college football. This week:

What is college football‘s best rivarly?

Dan Wolken

For some reason, there really is no single greatest rivalry in college football. There‘s no Duke-North Carolina. A lot of it is about what happens within the context of a season or era. The last few years, Florida State-Clemson has been the most impactful rivalry. Before that, it was Alabama-LSU. And obviously the Florida-Tennessee days have come and gone. But none of those important rivalries are steeped in history.

WEEK 13:

RANKINGS REACTION:

So for that reason, I‘ll take Army-Navy as the greatest rivalry for all the obvious reasons. It‘s a game everybody watches and everybody enjoys for the unique pageantry and what it means for the armed services. The athletes in that game are unique in their commitment to country, their sacrifice and their potential beyond football. It‘s just a special thing that has endured, even as the service academies no longer compete for national championships like they did in the 1940s and 50s. In a day and age where we all bemoan the commercialization of college sports and roll our eyes at the notion of amateurism, Army-Navy is as close to purity as we can get.

Lindsay Schnell

It has to be the Iron Bowl, partially because the Kick Six is so iconic. There’s no job more pressure-backed than Auburn, and it’s because of the large shadow cast by Nick Saban. This dynamic makes it interesting every year. Also, if you beat Alabama, you’re thought to be on an upward trajectory, and that’s an interesting story line to follow into bowl season, the offseason and ultimately, the next season. What other rivalry has that many implications?

Erick Smith

There’s no more heated rivalry and no better venue in college football than when Oklahoma plays Texas at the Cotton Bowl in the middle of the Texas State Fair every season. The stadium is split half crimson and half burnt orange separated by the 50-yard line. It’s like having a major bowl game environment for a game in the regular season. The banter in the stands is as good as the feistiness on the field between two of the best programs in the sport that not only compete for bragging rights each October, but also spend the rest of the year fighting for the same recruits. It’s a game every fan of the sport should experience at least once.

George Schroeder

If the question was most nationally relevant rivalry, the answer would be the Iron Bowl. Since 2009, the winner of Alabama-Auburn has advanced to the national championship game in every year except one (in 2014, Alabama fell in a Playoff semifinal). But “best” encompasses a whole lot else. Relevance, yes. Dislike, sure. History and tradition, for certain. And there are several worthy candidates. But let’s go with Ohio State-Michigan — two of college football’s perennial titans whose rivalry overflows with all of the above, and as a bonus, features ultra-cool uniforms. Unless the Buckeyes insist on those dumb alternates again. Then we’ll pick some other rivalry.

The best rivalry in college football is Kansas-Missouri. No, Texas-Texas A&M. Oklahoma-Nebraska? Alas. The word rivalry doesn’t mean what it used to. There are dozens of possible answers here, all of them accurate depending on your point of view. But I’ve always been partial to Army-Navy even if the game is never played on what we’ve come to call “rivalry weekend.” That the game stands alone on its own Saturday counts for something. That the rivalry hasn’t been impactful on a national scale for decades yet remains so meaningful is another reason why it’s impossible to ignore.

Joe Fleming

Whoever your team‘s biggest rival is. Despite the determined work of the national media — including, ahem, USA TODAY — to make everything national and all about the Playoff, the celebrated big rivalries wax and wane depending on the strength of the teams and the significance of the game each season. More important, college football at its essence is regional, and local. Yes, this is nostalgia run amok, the viewpoint of a fan who thinks the oversaturation of the sport has, in fact, diminished it. But even now, for most teams, a lost season often can be salvaged with a victory against the big rival, no matter what else happens. So, the answer to the question is: My U vs. Your U.

Army-Navy, the only true rivalry that all Americans can feel a connection to (regardless of whether they served), is a close second.

Eddie Timanus

As college football has changed over time into the multimillion-dollar business it is today, it’s easy to forget the sport was supposed to be about healthy competition that emphasizes team building, sportsmanship and mutual respect. The rivalry in FBS football that still truly embodies these ideals is Army-Navy.

Campus life is far different at service academies than at typical universities, and the players on these teams must by necessity put the student in student-athlete first.

The Midshipmen have been competing successfully at the sport’s highest level in recent years, and now the Black Knights are regaining their footing as well. You’ll have to wait a few weeks to watch this year’s version of the game, at which the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy will be on the line, but it is always well worth your time. Make no mistake. Everyone involved will play hard and try to win. But when it’s over, everyone is on the same side.
